a look inside BANKSY’s bemusment park

BANKSY’s newest art project, dismaland, opened this weekend and it is totally epic! dismaland is a gloomy and dark parody of world famous disneyland.  the “bemusement park” opened in weston-super-mare, england on friday for locals and saturday for the general public; it will run through late september.  the park features grumpy guards, funereal theme park games and art by about 60 artists from the u.s., europe and the middle east.  some of the most well known artists include: BANKSY (duh!), DAMIEN HIRST and JENNY HOLZER.

like many of BANKSY’s projects, dismaland came largely as a surprise.  speculation started when construction began a couple weeks before the park’s opening, but onlookers were misdirected with signs stating that a film crew for “grey fox” was at work. there was even a fake imdb account made for a movie called “grey fox” to solidify the ruse. the organizers managed to keep the exhibition a secret until thursday morning, when a local newspaper, the weston, worle & somerset mercury, formally announced it on twitter and ran a front-page article.

the famous “guerilla” artist, BANKSY, first appeared about 20 years ago in the u.k., where his political and often provocative work quickly made him the biggest name in the international street art scene.  in 2009, BANKSY surprised many with a staged exhibition featuring dozens of his own artworks at the bristol city museum. that show was also kept tightly under wraps before it opened, even from many staff members at the museum. BANKSY enjoys teasing the public and having fans second guess everything from his identity, which is still unknown, to where his next work will be.  in 2013, he orchestrated a huge outdoor exhibition where he had fans following scraps of clues to each new piece of work.
